In the preface of Three Hundred T’ang Dynasty Poems, William Dolby (1936-2015, translator specialises in premodern Chinese literature and Professor of Asian Study in the School of Literature, Linguistics and Culture at the University of Edinburgh) asserts that

"The poems have been translated, some many times, before. I hope that these renderings of mine have sometimes moved nearer to the basic sense of the poetry while acknowledging that the beauty of many of the originals may ultimately be beyond the grasp of any other language."

William’s translation collection of Chinese poet Li Po(701-762), Bring on Wine has been studied in my doctoral project.
